Natural Characteristics

Benzoin Siam is a natural aromatic resin obtained from trees of the Styrax genus. In Vietnam, the most common species associated with this resin is Styrax tonkinensis Pierre. The tree belongs to the Styracaceae family and grows naturally in several mountainous and upland areas. The tree produces small, fragrant white flowers arranged in clusters (panicles). Its fruit is spherical, 1–2 cm in diameter, covered with star-shaped hairs, and retains a persistent calyx at the base. The flowering season is from May to June, and the fruit ripens from September to October.

In Vietnam, there are four recorded species of the genus Styrax:

• Styrax tonkinensis Pierre

• Styrax benzoin Dryand

• Styrax agrestis G. Don

• Styrax annamensis Guill.

Among these, Styrax tonkinensis is the most common. It grows naturally in midland forest areas, especially in swidden fields and upland farms in provinces such as Hoa Binh, Dien Bien and Lai Chau

Benzoin Siam is obtained when resin is released from the trunk or branches of mature trees. The resin gradually hardens after exposure to air and can then be collected for further cleaning and processing. The raw resin is usually found in irregular lumps or pieces. Its color can range from pale yellow and beige to reddish brown, depending on the age of the resin and processing conditions.

One of its most recognizable characteristics is its natural aromatic scent. The aroma is sweet, warm, and balsamic, with a distinctive vanilla-like note. This makes Benzoin Siam an important natural raw material for fragrance and incense applications.

What Is Benzoin Siam?

Benzoin Siam is a natural resin collected from Styrax tonkinensis trees. When the tree is naturally injured or properly tapped, resin gradually exudes from the affected area. After collection, the hardened resin is cleaned to remove bark, leaves, wood fragments, and other impurities. It is then dried and sorted according to size and quality.

Benzoin Siam Quality Grades

Benzoin Siam can be sorted into three main grades according to the size of the resin pieces.

• Grade 1: Large resin pieces.
• Grade 2: Medium-sized resin pieces.
• Mixed Grade: A mixture of Grade 1 and Grade 2 pieces.

The three grades do not have significant differences in their basic chemical composition. The main distinction is the physical size and appearance of the resin pieces. The typical supply ratio is approximately 10% Grade 1, 20% Grade 2, and 70% Mixed Grade. The exact ratio may vary depending on the available raw material.

The resin has a distinctive vanilla aroma, is insoluble in water, and readily soluble in ethanol. For export, Benzoin Siam gum appears as opaque, grainy, almond-shaped fragments, ranging from a few millimeters to 30 mm, with a white to pale yellow color. With exposure to air, the gum may soften and form a reddish-brown mass due to oxidation, while the interior generally retains its original pale yellow-white color.

Harvesting and Processing

Benzoin Siam is harvested from mature trees with suitable resin production. The trunk or branches are treated to encourage the natural resin to flow. The resin gradually hardens after exposure to air. Once sufficiently developed, it is collected from the tree and transported for initial processing.

After harvesting, large impurities such as bark, leaves, and wood fragments are removed. The resin is then dried under suitable conditions to maintain its natural characteristics. The finished material is sorted according to size and quality. Depending on the customer’s requirements, product can be supplied as larger pieces, smaller fragments, or other specified forms.
