Shampoo ginger is a remarkable plant. Its scientific name is Zingiber zerumbet. It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family. This plant has many common names. It’s also known as Pinecone ginger. Botanical Characteristics of Shampoo Ginger
Shampoo ginger plants grow tall. They reach 1 to 1.3 meters in height. Their rhizomes are tuberous. These roots branch extensively. Young rhizomes are yellow and fragrant. Mature roots are large and firm. Their interior is yellow. They emit a sweet, pleasant aroma.
The leaves are sessile. They are arranged in layers. Each leaf is long and pointed. The upper surface is green. The underside is slightly paler. Leaf sheaths are smooth. Only the top part has hairs.
The flower spikes are striking. They measure 30 to 60 cm long. These spikes are covered in scales. The scale edges are hairy. The flowers are egg-shaped. They emerge directly from the rhizome. Initially green, they turn reddish-pink. The calyx and corolla are white. The labellum is pale yellow.
Fruits are oval capsules. Seeds are black. They have a soft white aril. Flowering season is May to June. Shampoo ginger grows wild widely. It thrives in damp, cool soil. - As an Appetizer and Tonic: Slice fresh or dried rhizomes (40-50g). Soak them in a 650ml bottle of rice wine. Macerate for 15-20 days. Strain the liquid. Drink three small glasses daily. This is beneficial for malnutrition. Avoid for cirrhotic ascites.
- For Hemostasis: Crush shampoo ginger rhizome. Mix with indigofera leaves. Apply this mixture to wounds. It helps stop bleeding.
Zerumbone is a key component. It’s in the essential oil. It inhibits Micrococcus Pyogenes Var. Aureus. It also inhibits Mycobacterium Tuberculosis.
